Stephen Conroy is a contemporary Scottish painter. Inspired by the work of both “/artists/francis-bacon/”Francis Bacon and “/artists/lucian-freud/”Lucian Freud, Conroy confronts the long history of European portraiture. Bisected by geometric backgrounds, his portraits, depict simple narratives of sullen men posing in suits. Born in 1964 in Helensburgh, United Kingdom, Conroy received his formal training at the Glasgow School of Art. The artist currently lives and works in Glasgow, United Kingdom. He has been the subject of several solo exhibitions at Marlborough Fine Art in London, and his works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
